The Egg

L'OEUF est fabriqué en contreplaqué découpé en anneaux, collés et travaillés ensemble. On peut le manoeuvrer de l’intérieur et le faire balancer, tourner, on peut danser dessus, contre, avec. La paroi est sensible aux sons, et les amplifie. Un système d’éclairage sans fil lui permet de se transformer en projecteur mobile.
Cet objet, comme ceux de cette catégorie, n'est plus une sculpture, pas encore un agrès de cirque, presque un jouet. L'oeuf nous invite à l'intériorité, à sortir ou à rentrer. Sa peau est une interface solide, un appui tangible mais sensitif.

Après l'avoir fait je me suis rendu compte que mes ancêtres fabriquaient des tonneaux (Kieffer est le mot Alsacien pour "tonnelier"). Je les ai imaginés dans un atelier plein de barriques, les faisant rouler sur la tranche pour les déplacer.

THE EGG
Plywood cut into rings, glued and shaped together.
The soft hidden handles allow THE EGG to be driven from the inside. One can also make it twist and roll, dance against, on or around it. The wooden shell leads the sound from the outside and allows the egg to become a percussive object.
I made a wireless lightning system, so that the EGG can become a mobile projector.
This object, as the ones of its kind, isn't a sculpture anymore, not yet a circus apparatus, almost a toy. The Egg invites us to interiority, to get in or out. Its skin is a solid, tangible yet sensitive interface.

After making it I realized that my ancestors were building barrels (Kieffer is the Alsatian word for "barrel maker"). I imagined them in a shop full of barrels, making them roll on the edge to move them.
